Answer or Solution

Program Locks up after Serial Registration Code is entered.

Solution:   If you terminate the currently running copy and restart the program, it will work as intended from that point on.  When the program appears to have locked up...

  1. Start Windows Task Manager (by pressing Ctrl-Alt-Del at the same time)
  2. In the applications tab, locate and highlight "Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler 8", or in that Processes tab, locate and highlight 'PMSAT", or "PMSATO", if you are running Optirouter.
  3. Click "End Task", and confirm your action when you are asked to do so.
  4. Restart the program. You should not encounter this problem again.

I just installed version 8.0 and when I try to run it I get the error message: "Failed to load control 'MapPro' from MapPro 71.OCX. Your version may be outdated..."

The most likely case is that you did not uninstall previous versions of the program (most notably version 7.0) from your system prior to installing version 8.0.  Please note that the first screen of the v8.0 installation cautions the user to do that!  You may uninstall v8.0, uninstall v7.0 and then re-install v8.0 - in that order.  That should take care of it.

Your alternate setup instructions tell me to select Start, Run but I can't find the "Run" option in Windows Vista.

The Run option is there, but unfortunately, in Vista, it is hidden by default.  You can customize the Start Properties to make it appear as in Windows XP, or you can use the following shortcut to make the Run box appear any time you need it.

To make the Run box appear use the key combination:

       Winkey-R

Winkey is the special Windows key found in the lower left area on most keyboards. It has the Windows logo and sometimes the word "Start" on it.  So, while holding down the Winkey Press the R key to make the Run box appear.

Problem: Windows Vista compatibility -  Version 8.0 runs through setup fine. When the program is run,  there is an error that there is a problem with Component ‘displays.ocx’ or one of it’s dependencies not being registered or missing.

Solution: Because of the new implementation of increased security in Vista, the program needs to be run with the user logged on to the system as the Administrator (that is the account automatically created when Vista is installed), or by right-clicking on the programs icon and selecting the option to run it as the Administrator (if the user is logged on with a different user account).

** Note that on many Vista installation, the Administrator account may be originally hidden, for Vista security purpose.  The link provided below contains information on how to access the Administrator account, if you are interested in doing so.

Problem: I am running the program in Windows Vista.  When I try to access Help (from the menu) I get a run-time error 70, and the program shuts down.  How can I fix that?

Unfortunately, Vista has introduced a number of security *features* that play havoc with applications developed in earlier operating systems.  This appears to be a callback failure.  Although it appears that you will not be able to access the Help facility through the menus, because of this problem, you should be able to do so by simply pressing the {F1} function key.

Problem: The software is not working with your GPS receiver.

Possible Solution (1):

If you are attempting to use the software with a USB GPS receiver, you will need to get a USB to COM Port software driver from the GPS manufacturer.  This driver will capture the information coming in to the USB port and internally divert it to a COM port.  Most GPS unit manufacturers use *proprietary* COM emulations in their USB devices, anyway, and they have recently made software device drivers available for free (on their web sites) to allow *other* mapping applications to work with their hardware.  Find the manufacturer of your GPS, go to their web site and look for a USB serial emulator driver.

For example, here is the description from the Delorme web site: (http://www.delorme.com/support/gps/lt20001.asp)

"DeLorme Serial Emulation Driver for USB Earthmate® GPS and Earthmate® GPS LT-20 Receiver

This update installs the DeLorme Serial Emulation Driver so that the USB Earthmate GPS and Earthmate GPS LT-20 receiver can be recognized in DeLorme Mapping applications as well as other NMEA 0183 compliant mapping applications".

Possible Solution (2):

You need to make sure that the settings on your GPS receiver, and/or any USB/COM emulator drivers, are the same as the settings in Precision Maping Streets & Traveller (e.g. the COM port #, the Baud rate, etc.)

I get several errors when importing Excel files for routing [Applies to OptiRouter Only]

The most likely culprit is the specification of the various fields, during the import process.  The Excel files that is being imported should contain each of the Address, City, State, ZipCode information in individual columns.   If a single column (cell) contains, for example, the City, State, ZipCode information, simply separated by commas, the import process will not work as intended.

For example, if your excel data is arranged as shown below, the import process will fail

A B C
Name Address City, State, Zip
J. SomeName 100 Some Street SomeCity, NM, 29123

If the excel data is organized this way, the import should be successful

A B C D E
Name Address City State ZipCode
J. SomeName 100 Some Street SomeCity NM 29123

After I import my points, I still can't get the routes calculated [Applies to OptiRouter Only]

The most common problem is that some of the imported points (addresses) have not geocoded properly and the Stop/Via point for the specific address has ended up with a Longitude and Latitude of 0,0, i.e., some point in the middle of the Atlantic.

This could be the result of improperly formatted data in the original data file, mistyped city, state names, etc.

You can find out which stop points have the 0,0 coordinates, correct the error in the original data and re-import the file.  If you click on a stop point in the routing dialog and then momentarily rest the mouse pointer there, the coordinates of the highlighted point should be displayed.  Alternatively, if you have saved the points to a file, from the routing dialog, you can open and view that file with any text-editor program (it is a plain ASCII text file), and see which point coordinates are 0,0.

When I try to import a simple excel file (with one record), I get the error message, "No Current Record Number 3021", or some similar error, even though I can see and select the record data in the drop-down selections of the Import dialog [Applies to OptiRouter Only]

The first row of information in the spreadsheet is supposed to be the Field Name definitions, that's why they appear in the drop-downs.  Since there is only a single row of data in the worksheet, that row is treated as the field names, and then, when the program attempts to read the actual data (that it is expecting to find below that row), it does not find anything and issues the above error.

A number of highways appear to be disconnected, and road segments appear, to be missing in the area of LA county, CA.

An error was discovered in the data file containing the street-level data for the state of California.  Downloading and installing Service Pack 1 will update the CA data file and will eliminate the "broken-road" problems some users were experiencing.

The program will not let be specify more than 20 user views.  I thought the limit was 100

This problems was discovered and corrected in later release of ver. 7.0, but somehow made it's way back into ver. 8.0. It corrected and included in Service Pack 1, that you can download and install from this web page.  The limit should actually be 200 user views, not 20 or 100.

If I try to run the program with the data files on a drive different than the default, I can't see any of the local streets until I open the "Configurations, Data" dialog tab, every time I restart the program

The program was attempting to determine if the data paths existed below inside the main folder of the program.  However, a flow in the design was bypassing the logic to then check any alternate locations for the data, until the user had accessed the Data Path configuration dialog.  The problem was corrected in Service Pack 1.

I am trying to calculate a short route in the Chicago area, and I get the message unable to route.

A problem was discovered in the treatment on "one-way" street segments during the routing calculations, which would result in a broken road network in Chicago and other major cities containing multiple one-way streets.  The problem was addressed in Service Pack 1.

Is Precision Mapping 8.0 compatible with UiView?  I am having a hard time making it work.

UnderTow Software has nothing to do with the development, distribution and/or support, and has no relation with UiView, other than we know it works with Precision Mapping.  As far as we know, Version 8.0 *does* work with UiView.  For more detailed information you may visit one of the UiView support web sites, e.g.

Note: Please, do not call UnderTow Software with questions of how to make UiView run, or why you can't see maps when running UiView, etc.  UnderTow software is not familiar with UiView and cannot provide any support for it.

PMSAT80, Service Pack 1  - Click here to download (Not for OptiRouter version)

18 Mb,  Less than a 4 min download on DSL or cable)

A. If you have a copy of version 8.0 with OptiRouter, please, email us at: support@undertowsoftware.com for instructions on getting Service Pack 1.  Downloading the service pack available here would NOT update your product.

B. If you have the Standard Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler v8.0, then...

First, check your current installation (Help, About PMSAT80). If the version number displayed is 8.0.80 or earlier, then you need to download and install this Service Pack 1, as outlined below.

  1. Click here to download the Service Pack file

  2. If your web browser program asks you to Run or Save the file, select Save

  3. Make sure to note where you are saving the file, so you can find it after the download is complete.

  4. Once the download is finished...

    • Make sure Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler is NOT running

    • Locate the file you just downloaded, double-click on it to run the installation of the service pack, and follow the directions displayed on the screen.

Note 1: Make sure that you install this service pack in the same folder as the original MSAT80  product, that you installed from the CD-ROM disks.

Note 2: This is only a Service Pack and not the full program. It requires that you have the original Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler v8.0 product already installed on your system.
