GPS No longer working

I just installed the latest version and my GPS is no longer working. I can see information scrolling (bottom right) but my location just shows a stop sign and it's not changing. What was broken in the new version?

I downloaded the latest version and I am using a cheap, generic usb gps receiver. It worked before the download and it works now, without any problem. I didn't have to change any settings, or anything. It's weird that you say you see the information scrolling but the location is not changing. What GPS unit are you using?

I use the latest upgrade on two systems, without any problems. I have it on an older XP system using an older Delorme USB receiver and on a system with Windows 7 that is using an old garmin etrex serial gps with a cheap serial-to-USB adapter. I agree with ruby22, it's weird that you can see the information coming in, but the position is not changing. IS that while you are moving, or are you just testing the device, at home?

Since you think this happened after the update, did you try installing an older version (maybe the original from the disk) and see if the problem goes away?

Kimtoll, I am using it with an old garmin serial gps (doesn't even have any model info on it) and a generic serial-to-usb dongle. It's really weird, because it was working fine up until last week. Then, I installed the new version I downloaded and it no longer works. But the information (I think it's NMEA sentence stuff) keeps coming in the little areas (bottom right of the screen).

I uninstalled the program and installed the copy from the disk, and guess what, it's not working! So, maybe it's not the update. Something else is going on here. Could it be some Windows or driver update that took place automatically and caused this? &^#%$$#% Windows :-(

Any ideas, anyone?

Well, uninstalling is only part of the battle :-( Unfortunately, what most software companies will not tell you is that uninstalling doe NOT erase any files that were created by the program/user, AFTER the installations, which includes configuration files. So, what probably happened is, you uninstalled the program (the latest version), the old configuration stayed behind, then you installed the program from disk and run it, the program saw the configuration file and used it, so you were actually using the same old configuration file with whatever problems it might or might not have.

In cases like this, what you should probably do is a clean uninstall/install. The process varies from program to program, since they use different files, folders, etc. and I haven't done one for this program, but someone else here might have done and can post the "how to" for doing it.

I've spent many hours on this, it really shouldn't be that hard to get the gps, that stopped working after the latest update, to work again, should it? I dug out an older copy of the program (v8.1), installed it and the gps works just fine. uninstalled 8.1, re-installed v9 from the disk, gps doesn't work. downloaded and installed the latest version of v9, again, gps doesn't work. I am at my wits end. if anyone can provide step-by-step of how to do a clean uninstall/install, I'll try it.

Originally I thought this might be a windows problem, but based on my newer experience, I am not sure. If it was, v8.1 would not have worked, either. It starts to point to a problem with the software.

If anyone here can help I would really appreciate it!

I've done it a few times, so I'll take a crack at it ;-)

I don't know what operating system you are using and the directions may be sligthly different for each, but I'll presume you are using Win 7. Here are the steps I would take to prepare for a clean install of Pmsat90.

    - Open the Windows control panel, look for Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler v9 and uninstall it

    - Use Windows Explorer to navigate to c:\Program File, or c:\Program Files (x86) if you are using a 64-bit version of the operating system, look for a folder Precision Mapping Streets and Traveler v9 and delete it.

    - Open your \Documents folder and then locate the PMSAT90 folder

    - You could delete it, but I prefer renaming it, just in case i later need any of the files in that folder. Rename it to PMSAT90-A, or something like that. At this point you should have a system that 's ready for a clean install.

    - Put the DVD in teh drive and install a fresh copy of the program.

Hope this helps.

Dimitry, I followed the steps you outlined and what do you know, my gps is working again. I had done pretty much the same thing many times before, but the gps was failing every time. I don't know which step in your process was the magic step, but I'l glad it worked!

I have to say, thought, that companies like Trailer Life should make using a gps much easier. With most software and hardware combos, nowadays, you just plug them in, they detect each other, they communicate with each other and they start working together. This program is one of a few that doesn't do this automatically. I mean, I like the program, but at times I feel they expect me to be a Windows expert to get it working right.

Anyway, enough complaining :-) Thanks, Dimitry, my gps is working once again and I am O.K.

Glad I found this, as I bought a new NMEA GPS and tried it on version 9 which is installed on my desktop. Obviously not needed, but an easy place to test. Had the same problem as described above. The data scrolls by, but it is truncated, and part of the longitude is complete garbage, though the latitude is correct. The GPS works fine on all my other programs, and version 8.1 on my laptop. It isn't worth doing a reinstall for my stationary desktop, but at least I know what the problem is. I will try and find the particular place to fix, rather than brute force. Thanks to those who posted the very helpful information on this.
